Fully automatic manufacturing and assembly automation machines are becoming more compact to save cost and plant floor space. Fiber optics are used where mounting space is limited for a standard photoelectric sensor. Because the electronics are contained in a separate housing that can be remotely located, only the fiber must be mounted near the target. This is particularly useful where the ambient temperature is higher than the electronics can tolerate or where there is electrical noise (RFI or EMI) in the immediate area. Fiber optics are also able to withstand high levels of mechanical shock and vibration.
